This highly unusual version of the legendary puzzle is crafted from colorful semi-precious gemstones. The Soma Cube was first imagined by famed Danish polymath Piet Hein in 1936, during a lecture on quantum physics by Werner Heisenberg (father of the uncertainty principle). But aside from its impressive intellectual pedigree, the Soma cube is actually quite easy to approach. Simply assemble the seven pieces into a cubenot terribly difficult as there are over 200 possible solutions.

What makes the Soma cube a favorite amongst architects and artists are the seemingly endless possibilities for sculptural shapes and figures: dogs, pyramids, castles, skyscrapers, bathtubs and sofas have all been constructed from the seven elemental shapes of the Soma cube. In fact, Soma was named after the addictive drug featured in A Brave New World, which should tell you something about the effect this innocent puzzle has on many creative minds.
